Trey was never slack in picking heroes or cover songs. In Pat Metheny’s “Phase Dance,” he found some genius of both types. Each of Phish’s four known performances (9/27/87, 2/7/88, and 2/8/88, 2/26/88) pales in comparison to the original, but they illustrate Trey’s reach, and have no doubt helped expose some hippies to crucial contemporary jazz.
